If asked, most of us would say that we would want to be as healthy as possible. After all, being healthy gives you the chance to live the best, happiest, and longest life possible and that’s something we all want. And sure, there are always going to be times when we slip up or make a mistake but that’s just something we all have to be willing to come to terms with. However, it can often go beyond that to the point where a lot of us end up in a position where we’re not making any real effort to keep ourselves healthy at all. There are plenty of reasons that this can happen, one of the most common being the stress of work and life making it difficult to want to put the effort it. However, there’s one thing that often makes more of a difference than anything else and that’s only thinking about your health in isolation rather than in terms of how it fits with the rest of your life. With that in mind, here are some ways that you can start thinking about your health in a more holistic way.
The first thing that jumps to a lot of people’s minds when they think about their health is their diet. And sure, a proper diet is a great way to ensure that you’re staying healthy. However, the mistake a lot of people make is that they mix up “healthy” with “low calorie”. The truth is that most people consider a healthy diet to be one that causes you to lose weight. And sure, if you’re in a position where your weight is causing some kind of harm to your body then sure, but most of the time a healthy diet is a whole lot more than that. A healthy diet is about giving your body everything it needs and the only way you can really do that is by making sure that you’re cooking your own meals from scratch. That way you can be sure what goes into your food and you can regulate what it is that you’re eating as much as possible. The great thing about this is that it gives you the chance to learn plenty go exciting recipes and you may well even discover a love of cooking.
There’s no denying that most of us live a pretty sedentary lifestyle for the most part. Many people work office jobs where they’re sat down all day and then they go home and they sit in front of the TV on the couch all evening. The truth is that many of us simply aren’t living an active life and an active life is essential for staying healthy. Of course, you don’t need to become a gym addict, you just need to be willing to get up and active pretty regularly, even in small ways. However, you also need to look at other aspects of your lifestyle. How much are you drinking? Are you staying out partying all the time? All of these things have an impact on your body and your mind and are worth paying attention to.
Your work life
Most of us spend the vast majority of our time at work and that can be truly exhausting. Spending the bulk of your time working, doing something that you may well not be that interested in, is one of the most tiring things there is. Not only that but there’s a chance that your job is going to be causing you a whole lot of stress that can have serious ramifications for your mental and physical health as well as for your relationships. The key is to figure out how you can more effectively balance your work life so that it’s not making your home life utterly miserable as well as doing your body genuine harm.
We all live busy lives and one of the major things that a lot of people try and do in order to fit everything in is to make sacrifices. Now, there’s nothing inherently wrong with that but the problem is that people tend to sacrifice sleep before just about anything else. You might think that staying up late to get things done and losing a few hours sleep isn’t going to be that big of a deal but the truth is that not getting enough sleep can be incredibly dangerous. For one thing, it’s going to leave you exhausted all day long which makes you less emotionally equipped to deal with any of the issues you may face. But exhaustion also has a whole lot of physical health risks that come with it like a lowered immune system. Whatever sacrifices you make to get things done in life, you can’t let sleep be one of them.
Your mental health
It’s not just your physical health that’s potentially an issue. The reality is that your mental health is just as important and you need to be able to look at that holistically as well. You need to look at all of the factors in your life that influence your mental wellbeing. From your past to your social life to your work and even things like your horoscope if that’s something that you believe in. Being able to connect with your mental health and the ways that your life impacts it is every bit as important as taking care of your physical health.
Of course, one of the things that you have to remember is that it’s not a good idea to only ever look at your health in terms of the things that you should be doing. Many of us tend to try and avoid seeing a doctor or any kind of medical professional for fear that it could end up being something more serious but it’s essential that you remember to get things checked if it seems like there’s anything wrong with your health. Part of dealing with it in a holistic way is being able to recognise when the best thing for you is professional help.
