Dr. ErinKate's ( Dr. EeKs') Bio:
Dr. ErinKate is a medical doctor currently working as a holistic wellness coach, consultant, humor therapist and medical writer. She's also a certified Nia instructor. ( If you don't know what Nia is, it saves her life daily so check it out at Nia Now. ) Her approach to wellness coaching is the same as her approach to most anything in her life: SIMPLE and on the common sense path with the least, negative side effects. She's originally from Trucksville, Pa, where there's "almost" more cows than people. After graduating first in her high school class ( she didn't go to high school in Trucksville, so my class wasn't just me and a few milk cows) she was recruited to play soccer at West Point, the US Military Academy. Her first day there was torture, especially after she told an upperclassman "Magazines are things you read, Sir." After about 1000 pushups, she learned that they actually held bullets. ;) While there, she majored in chemistry-life sciences, minored in environmental engineering, played soccer, ran on the marathon team, worked as an artist for the yearbook, and conducted her first research project on phytoremediation, which was later displayed on a poster at the Environmental Chemistry Society's National meeting. Because she signed up for the wrong division, her poster was displayed next to NASA's. She made NASA look bad. ;) After graduating and the army, she thought she was going to veterinary school, like her dad, an amazing veterinarian who runs and operates a veterinary hospital, but she realized she could never put an animal down or deal intimately with parasitic worms. So instead she went to medical school, like her older sister, a pediatrician and internist. While in medical school and to help pay the bills, she worked as a personal trainer at Bally total fitness and for ArtReach, a Nonprofit that makes the performing arts accessible to all populations, especially the most disadvantaged in society. Part of her job was escorting prisoners to plays throughout Philadelphia and hearing their commentary was worth every second. It was then when she personally observed the healing benefits of art. She performed ( sang and violin) in the pediatric AIDS benefit shows for the same reason. While in medical school she took up acting lessons, comedic writing and debauchery. ( Emphasis on the debauchery) ;) Then she finished up her clinicals in NYC, while working on the side as an elite athlete for Running Paws and an editor for a popular dating site and online magazine.
Soon after she worked as a holistic wellness coach for really, stressed-out corporate folks in NYC and went on to start Blooming Wellness. Her reasons for starting Blooming Wellness can be found in this blog HERE. After living and working with a brilliant, eccentric herbalist/aromatherapist for 6 months, her interest in alternative therapies blossomed, especially in the realm of mental health. That's one of the reasons she accepted the position as editor and chief for Alternative Mental Health's newsletter. There's so much out there the general population JUST doesn't know about, and she's on a mission to inform people. Another reason would be she successfully treated her own bout with depression with alternative means after conventional treatments failed her miserably. ( Pun intended! ;) ) Her diagnosis of "terrible asthma" or "Sarcoid" or as her latest lung doc calls it "Idiopathic Lung disease" is treated with conventional inhalers and lots of oxygen. ;). Idiopathic is a big, fancy doctor word for "I dunno." ;) Alternative Mental Health is the largest, international organization dedicated to educating people about safe, viable alternatives for treating mental illness as well as educating people about physical illnesses that may mimic psychiatric illnesses. Erin really enjoys interviewing alternative practitioners all over the place who are currently doing amazing things in the world of mental health-things that rarely make the mainstream news ,and things that were definitely never taught to her in medical school. She's an active member of the AMWA (American Medical Writers Association) and an affiliate speaker for the National Eating Disorders Association. In her free time she enjoys NIA, laughter yoga, krav maga, hiking, running, ghost hunting, facebooking and playing the violin, which she has played since she was 6. Her favorite time to play the electric violin is 3 AM, and her neighbors really love that about her. She recently finished a crazy memoir ( but whose memoir isn't?) and started writing another book, because she can't not write. She loves giving talks on wellness, setting up wellness workshops for corporate organizations and others, and simply helping people become self reliant about maintaining their own health and happiness in natural, individualized ways. She lives in NYC with her cat, Awol, has no kids, but to satisfy her maternal instinct she adopted a whale, Jonah, for 25 cents a month through the National Wildlife Association. He lives in the ocean, is very independent and makes her proud. So proud, she might adopt a second whale! Any other questions, feel free to email her and ask! :)
